"kNOw Supports": the techniques and challenges of supportless metal additive manufacturing (DMLS)

Fahd CHAOUI
EOS

The mastery of support techniques in Additive Manufacturing goes beyond the technical challenges faced by most AM designers and manufacturers. The new challenge today is to no longer need supports and therefore to open-up new applications, impossible of this manufacturing technique, and to increase its market share in the high-end technical parts manufacturing. This presentation aims to raise public awareness of the concept of "kNOw supports" developed by the Additive Minds team at EOS, to share concrete examples, and finally identify the few challenges that remain to be overcome so that this technique becomes a standard in metal additive manufacturing.

TCO Reduction by hybrid manufacturing: Metal 3D printing on milled preforms

Jean Louis FACILA
GF MACHINING

Metal printing now makes it possible to produce parts of great complexity by bringing together many advantages compared to conventional technologies. However, depending on the applications, the technology can generate a prohibitive cost per part.

A relevant approach then consists in opting for hybrid manufacturing, namely printing only the most complex geometry on a preform for which conventional machining is the most optimal choice. However, this approach requires both a certain expertise and technological tools.
